How Does Rainy Weather Affect Your Foundation?

How Does Rainy Weather Affect Your Foundation? - Image 1

Your foundation is arguably the most important part of your property. Think about a game of Jenga. What happens when you pull one of the bottom blocks out from the tower? Everything comes crashing down and the game is over, right? Same goes for your foundation! When there are weak spots, the entire house begins to shift and slide. Read on to understand how heavy rain can affect your foundation and what to do if you should notice these problems.

Foundation Cracks & Settling

Heavy rain can create cracks along the foundation of your home. One reason for this is when the surrounding soil around your home gets wet, it absorbs all of this rainwater. As it collects more and more water, the pressure of the expanding soil around your home continues to increase. This results in hairline cracks up the walls and if they continue to grow, they will allow that rainwater to seep into your home.

Another issue that stems from heavy rain is foundation settling. As we already covered, the soil your home sits on will soak up all the rainwater that falls, and will sink or settle due to the softening of the soil underneath. Sometimes, foundation settling will lead to broken pipes, cracking within the walls of the home, or difficulty keeping doors closed.

Know When to Call an Expert

Once the storm clears, walk around your home and check to see if there are any visible cracks or damage. It's best to call an expert when you find a potential issue, no matter how small you think it may be. Never procrastinate foundation repair! The longer you wait, the larger the cracks can grow, allowing water to seep in and potentially flood your basement or crawl space, causing even more damage than what you started with.

Here at Alford Foundation and Crawl Space Repair, we offer FREE estimates. So why wait? One of our Solution Specialists will come out, inspect your property, clearly explain to you what is happening and how to fix it, then provide you with a quote. There is no obligation or cost for an estimate!
